The Beeville Community Chorus will present its annual Christmas concert at the mission in Goliad State Park Saturday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. There will be a $3 per person park entrance fee.

The choir will open the first section of the evening’s concert with four sacred anthems. The opening anthem, “I Will Sing,” is a medley of well-known and favorite hymns and will be directed by Jeff Brewer, assistant director of the choir. Two other anthems Brewer will direct are “Great is the Lord,” written by Michael and Deborah Smith and “God and God Alone” by Phill McHugh. Linda Ray, an alto in the choir, will be featured on the violin on “Great is the Lord.” Dr. James Lee, artistic director of the choir, will direct the choir in a 16th century sacred piece, “Agnus Dei,” by Thomas Morley. Nona Schrop from George West is the choir accompanist.

The second section of the concert will be the story of Christmas told by the choir in song. The choir will open this section with “Emmanuel, God With Us.” The choir will perform one of the masterworks of the Renaissance by Tomas Luis de Victoria, “O Magnum Mysterium” (O Great Mystery). This piece was written and performed in a cathedral in Italy during the 16th century. The mission is a wonderful venue that gives the listener the acoustical feeling of being in a large cathedral.

The choir will also sing a beautiful song written by Chris Eaton and Amy Grant, “Breath of Heaven” (Mary’s Song), and a German 16th century carol, “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming.” A special setting of “Silent Night” entitled, “A Celtic Silent Night,” will again feature Linda Ray on the violin. To end the second section of the concert, Thomas Brewer, a tenor in the choir, will sing “Mary, Did You Know.”

The choir will sing two Christmas favorites, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” Donna Davis will add special sounds with finger cymbals and Jose Arredondo on the snare drum

The choir will end the concert with a Festive Carol Celebration which is a setting of many favorite carols of the season.

The choir also will perform its Christmas concert on Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gertrude R. Jones Fine Arts Auditorium on the Coastal Bend College campus. Admission to the concert will be $5 for all adults and $3 for students and children. All current patrons will be admitted free with the presentation of their season patron card.
