Webster’s defines ‘doubt’ as ‘uncertainty of belief or opinion that often interferes with decision making.’ The Refugio Bobcats removed this word from many mental dictionaries in their season opener last Friday night in Ingleside.

The Bobcat engine took a few minutes to warm up but then went full throttle soundly blasting the Ingleside Mustangs 62-27.

The Mustangs drew first blood, scoring with just under 8:00 left in the first quarter then waited for a response. The response came quickly with Refugio scoring less than 4 minutes later on a nine-play drive that culminated in a four-yard touchdown run by Malcolm Franklin.

The Bobcats then turned all the switches to ‘on.’ Just 22 seconds later, the Bobcat defense found the ball with Alex Coronado snagging a tipped pass and returning it 30 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked by the Mustangs and returned for two points closing the gap.

The Mustangs mounted an offensive drive in the next series but the Bobcat defense held strong with great plays by JB Brown and Dana Franklin. Devon LaFrance was practically all over the Mustang offense.

With the Bobcats getting the turnover on downs, quarterback Travis Quintanilla started delivering the air mail, hooking up with Marcus Thompson for an 80-yard score. The Bobcat defense held again near midfield and gave the offense another shot.

Thompson got the call again and rumbled in from 14 yards out. Ingleside scored once before the half to make the score 34-21.

The Bobcats controlled the air in the second half with Quintanilla hooking up with Chase Whetsel, who had nine catches for 165 yards on the night, Franklin on an 18-yard touchdown strike and Thompson once more on a 14-yard TD reception.

The Mustangs would find the end zone again but time would not be on their side, leaving the Bobcats with their 52nd win in a row by the score 62-27.

“What a great start to the season,” said Head Coach Jason Herring. “We beat a very good football team tonight.”

Next up is the Bobcats home opener as they host the Edna Cowboys in Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.
