HOUSTON – At the beginning of the season there was talk from around the state that this was a rebuilding year for the Bobcats – that this team contained too many players without experience.

Well, with the Bobcats advancing to their second state title game in three years, consider the team rebuilt.

And always remember, Refugio Bobcat football experience begins in the womb.

With the 69-33 dismantling of Waskom, the Bobcats find themselves in the same game, in the same stadium, and facing the same opponent as two years ago. Déjà vu, anyone?

Before the Bobcats could face reliving a past-life experience, undefeated and Region 3 powerhouse Waskom stood in the way.

In the first period, Waskom struck fast and hard with two touchdowns to put the Wildcats up 14-0.

Travis Quintanilla rallied the Bobcats back on two touchdown passes: the first from 30 yards out to Devon LaFrance, and the second, a 6-yard toss to Tyler Castellano. Adolfo Cordero added the PATs and the game was 14-14 going into the second.

The Bobcat scoring mechanism went into high gear to start the second period.

Isaiah Perez rumbled in for a touchdown from 5 yards out. Quintanilla then zeroed in on Castellano on an 11-yard reception for a TD to give Refugio a 28-14 lead.

Waskom scored three minutes later to make it 28-21. It only took 56 seconds for the Bobcats to answer back on a 17-yard touchdown reception by Dana Franklin.

Perez took another 5-yard touchdown run late in the period, but the Wildcats also added another score before the halftime break.

At halftime, the Bobcats held on to a 42-27 lead.

The Bobcats handled the only two touchdowns in the third quarter.

First, a 49-yard touchdown pass from Quintanilla to LaFrance, effectively sealed yet another state record for Quintanilla with the most passing yardage in a single season.

With the third period winding down, JB Brown blasted through the Waskom defense on a 71-yard touchdown run to make the score 56-27.

Brown scored another rushing touchdown to begin the fourth quarter, this time from 31 yards out to make it 63-27.

Waskom scored again a few minutes later, but it was their last of the day.

Quintanilla placed the cherry on top of the day with a 17-yard touchdown reception to Tyler Castellano to finish off the game 69-33.

The Bobcats will once again square off against the Cisco Loboes at AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the 2013 2A Division II State Championship Thursday, Dec. 19. Kickoff of the state game is slated for 8 p.m. Refugio will be the home team.
