According to Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby, the dead man is suspected to be one of the 23 illegal immigrants who fled a pickup truck after being stopped by a DPS trooper on U.S. Highway 59 near Farm-to-Market Road 239 on Aug. 6.
Brumby said the body had been at the location where it was found since Friday or Saturday. He said investigators believe the body was dropped off at the location by a black pickup truck that was seen driving in the area.
Brumby said a brother of one of the suspected illegal immigrants that escaped had contacted law authorities and claimed his brother had died after the escape. The body was sent to Lockhart, where an autopsy will be performed.
The dead man had not been identified as of Wednesday afternoon. Cause of death was also unknown.
The U.S. Immigration and Enforcement Department is investigating the case.
