In Thursday’s game, the Cougars got off to a great start as they poured in 10 straight points before the Pirates could get on the scoreboard. That 10-point lead did not last or hold up for long as VC fought back and got within five at 24-19. The Cougars then got hot from the field with guards La’Darrien Williams and Brandon Golden hitting from outside and on drives. Forward Darrick Little also found his mark and hit several baseline jumpers to lead the Cougars into halftime with a 41-28 advantage over the Pirates.
The Cougars continued their pressure defense and kept the Pirates bottled up in the second 20 minutes of action. CBC outscored the visitors by 10, 43-33, in the second half to cruise to a 84-61 victory over the VC Pirates.
In Saturday’s contest with the Rangers from San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston, the Cougars did not shoot or defend as well. The score was 35-34 at the half with the Cougars holding the slim and vulnerable lead.
The shorter, but feisty Rangers just kept plugging away at the Cougars, keeping within six points or closer the entire second half. Fort Sam’s shooting held up, and the visitors grabbed their first lead at 72-71 with under three minutes left on the clock. The Rangers kept the lead most of the rest of the way and in fact were up by two, 77-75, as time wound down to one second left on the clock, but a foul was called on the Rangers that put Little at the line for the Cougars, needing both shots to send the game into overtime. Little calmly sank both chances, and the game was into overtime.
The five-minute session had both teams squander short-lived leads. The Rangers finally led by four at 87-83 with just 4.4 seconds left. One last basket from the Cougars was all that the CBC men could muster and the Rangers emerged with a tough 87-85 victory.
The Cougars got good guard play in Saturday’s game, but the front line of bigs seemed to be almost forgotten and not a factor against the shorter Fort Sam team.

The Cougars made the trip to San Antonio on Tuesday night to seek a little payback vs. the Rangers. The CBC men will host Southwest Texas at Uvalde on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Cougars’ den.
