Candidates will square off in debate

KARNES COUNTY – Voters will get a chance to listen to candidates running for three county offices speak and respond to questions during a debate set for 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 2.

The Karnes Countywide is again joining with Radio KAML 990 AM to bring a Candidates’ Forum and Debate to the Karnes City High School Auditorium.

Admission is free and open to the general public.

Candidates for the office of county commissioner, county sheriff and county attorney have been invited to share the stage with moderator Cletus Bianchi to field questions submitted by local media and the general public.

Most of the 12 candidates invited have confirmed that they plan to participate in the debate.

For the office of County Commissioner Precinct 1, Republican Candidate Gary Deskin has been invited as well as Democrat candidates for the same office, Carl Hummel, Shelby Dupnik and Tommy Shockome.

For the office of County Commissioner Precinct 3, Democrat Candidates James Rosales and Mary Lozano have been invited.

For the office of County Attorney, Democrat Candidate Herb Hancock has been invited as well as Republican Candidate Betty Yarter.

For the office of County Sheriff, Democrat Candidates David Jalufka, Spencer Stubbs, Freddie Barrientez and Dwayne Villanueva have all been invited.

Candidates will make opening statements and then answer questions, most of which will come from the general public, and only questions that are addressed to all the candidates in a given race, will be selected. After responding to as many questions as time allow s, candidates will make closing statements.

The event will be broadcast live on KAML Radio 990 AM, and also on the local radio station’s web site at www.kaml990.com. Listeners can also tune in online at www.ustream.tv/the-karnes-countywide.
