“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21)

Humans have one duty: to glorify God. Because He is holy, He calls His people to be holy. We are to be set apart, that He might be glorified. If we honor the Lord, He will bless us. He will feed and nourish our bodies that our souls may be prepared for the kingdom of heaven.

As God’s people, we are not to hold faith in any particular creed, religion, observance, or any act of benevolence, charity, humiliation, or repentance as a substitute for holiness. We are to be partakers of His Divine nature, saved from sin and the corruption of this world, our souls transformed into holiness, and our outward acts righteous, or we will never see God. Jesus Christ was sent for this very purpose – that He might purify us through faith in His blood blotting out our sin and restoring our souls to His image.

In Scripture, the “heart” is the seat of life and strength. It means the mind, soul, and spirit – our entire emotional nature and understanding. When people refuse to let God be their God, their hearts are darkened, and they cannot see. Isaiah 24 tells us there is an impending judgment on the earth and its people. Verse 11 reads, “and all joy is darkened”.

Heathens do not respect God or place value in Him. They are not thankful to God. They continually dishonor His authority. God’s Word says these people are without excuse. In other words, all their diversions and maneuvers of deception to evade the truth and not give honor to the Lord are vain, or useless.

In Luke 14:16-24, Jesus told a parable about a great banquet. The people who were invited all made excuses for not coming. The master told his servant, “…not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.”

Jesus has invited every one of us to that great day when we will sit down at a banquet with Him. Have you accepted His invitation? Does your life bring glory to Him? If not, what is your excuse?
