George West City Manager Sandra Martinez said the two-day event drew in a crowd of about 2,500 people, 20 vendors and a lot of out-of-town visitors for George West. Each cook-off team paid $150 to compete.
Performances included mariachi dance groups such as Beeville’s Fiesta Ballet Folklorico and bands such as George West’s Pear Ratz and the Kyle Carpenter Band added to the festivities’ flavor.
“We think it went great,” Martinez said. “It’s twofold; we’re trying to promote local events and trying to raise money for our sports complex.”
More than $6,500 in cash prizes were awarded in the cook-off, with the meats categories sanctioned by the International Bar-B-Q Cookers Association. A team of judges took one bite of each dish for all eight categories and rated them one at a time.
This year’s categories included brisket, rubs, chicken, ribeye steak, hot wings, beans, dessert and fajitas.
Awards in each category were $500 for first place down to $100 for fifth place, the grand champion won $1,000 and a trophy and the reserve champion won $500 and a trophy.
Cook-off results and the winners of Mr. and Mrs. Cinco de Mayo were not available in time for press.
