BEEVILLE – Wearing a seat belt when on the road is a good idea any time.

But it is especially a good idea during a Click It or Ticket week. That is when a violator is more likely to get a ticket for not wearing that belt.

Chief Joe Treviño of the Beeville Police Department is reminding everyone that his officers will be out in force between May 20 and June 2 looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing their seat belts.

The Texas Department of Transportation, which sponsors the Click It or Ticket events, has awarded the BPD a $6,000 grant so the department can pay officers overtime for working extra hours during that week.

Treviño said writing tickets and working overtime are not the reason for the special week.

“The goal is to get people to use their seat belts, thereby reducing injuries and death caused by traffic crashes,” the chief said.

Writing tickets is not the best answer. That would be for motorists to get into the habit of always buckling up those belts every time they get into a vehicle.
