The first request was to close both West Corpus Christi and North St. Mary’s streets around the Bee County Courthouse for the National Night Out event, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and end at 8 p.m., but organizers asked that they be allowed to have the streets blocked between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to give them time to set and take down their facilities.
This year, the event will include a mini fair in the parking lot of the Joe Barnhart Bee County Library and two inflatable children’s attractions in the east parking lot at the courthouse.
Organizers said the event will be a lot of fun.
Local organizations will have tables set up at the event this year.
Council members also approved requests to provide police escorts and temporary street closures for the Sixth Annual Bee County Public Square Rosary Rally, starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, and for a Western Week Celebration five-kilometer run on Oct. 17.
This year, the run will be held in the evening instead of in the morning.
In other business, the council voted to:
— Accept reports from the Beeville Police Department and Municipal Court.
— Approve paying $31,755 for work on traffic signal upgrades ongoing along North St. Mary’s Street.
— Postpone action on accepting a 2014 airport maintenance grant.
— Approve awarding a $5,000 facade improvement grant from the Tax Increment Finance District for the old J.C. Penney’s Building on North Washington Street.
— Postpone an executive session to consider the appointment of an interim municipal court attorney.
