Susie Childress, believed in helping others less fortunate.
So after she died, her children, Scott Childress and Casey Bridges wanted to continue her good deeds: by donating her household belongings to the women’s shelter in Beeville.
“Our mother, Susan Childress, was always giving to the community and we just want to carry on that tradition of giving, and what better way than to give to the women’s shelter, which needs items such as these,” said Scott, the administrator at Exclusive Home Health Hospice in Beeville.
Lilly Elizondo, victims advocate for the Bee County Women’s Shelter, said the donation couldn’t come at a better time.
“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” she noted.
The lamps, towels, blankets, laundry hampers, bedding and other household furnishings will help victims of domestic violence, most of whom arrive at the shelter with only the clothes on their backs, Elizondo said.
“These are items our clients may need when they leave an abusive situation,” Elizondo added. “Many times they leave without anything; they’re starting fresh, and (because of the donated items) they can feel a little more independent.”
Beeville Police Department officers helped load the household furnishings into a horse trailer and deliver them to the women’s shelter.
Last month some 102 women visited the shelter, Elizondo said. Sixty women have visited the shelter so far this month.
The women’s shelter is located at 305 N. St. Mary’s St. in Beeville.
