BEEVILLE — It was a good night for the A.C. Jones sub-varsity girls basketball squads on Tuesday. The young Lady Trojans swept both basketball games against district foe Calallen.

In the freshman contest, the Beeville girls put up a tight defensive front and kept the Ladycats to a mere four first half points. The Lady Trojans finished with just 19 points on the night, but kept the visitors to 13 markers to get the win.

“The girls played quite well on both sides of the court. We were able to out hustle and out-rebound them throughout the game,” said Lady Trojan freshman coach Abel Barrera.

Tiffany Vargas led the Beeville scoring with six points. Jane Cano, Amber Garcia and Samantha Salazar each contributed four markers in the win. Elaina Rodriguez made one free throw to complete the Beeville scoring.

In the JV match, the story was much the same. The Lady Trojan defense was superb. The Calallen girls managed to score just three points in the first period while the Lady Trojans struck for eight tallies. The three-point lead grew to five as the hosts added six points in the second quarter and held the Ladycats to four. It was a 14-7 game at the half with the home team on top.

The Lady Trojans continued their defensive pressure and limited the Calallen offense to another seven points over the final two quarters. The Lady Trojans pulled away with 11 markers after the halftime break to capture the 25-14 victory.

Beeville post Margaret Downing dominated the scoring with six points in each half to total 12 tallies. Amber Garcia added seven in the win. Angelika Benavidez contributed four points. Cheyenne Del Bosque sank two points and along with MacKenzie Harvey helped direct the Beeville offense at point.

The Lady Trojans were at Tuloso-Midway on Friday night to tangle with the Cherokees. On Tuesday, the JHS girls will travel to meet the Gregory-Portland Wildcats.
