YORKTOWN — The Goliad Tigers may not have scored too many style points Friday night, but coach John Mares was still happy to leave Yorktown’s Wildcat Stadium with a victory.

The Tigers had touchdowns from three different players and held the Wildcats to three first downs and 92 total yards in taking a 21-6 win and improving their record on the season to 2-0.

“You can’t take anything away from Yorktown,” Mares said. “Those kids got after it. They stayed after us all the way through.”

The Tigers took a 14-0 lead into halftime after quarterback Dalton Sturm scored on a 9-yard run with 7:02 left in the second quarter and through a 1-yard touchdown pass to Esteban Carrera with 42 seconds remaining in the first half.

Goliad increased its lead with 7:51 left in the third quarter when running back Jeremy Pena broke loose on a 48-yard touchdown run. Sturm’s third extra point of the game made it 21-0.

The Wildcats (1-1) got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter when quarterback Derek Franke ran 18 yards for a touchdown.

“Our defense, when they needed to stand tall, they stood tall,” Mares said. “We didn’t execute well the first half and the defense kept us in the ball game.”

Pena had 146 yards rushing on 19 carries and Isaiah Fair added 74 yards on just seven carries.

The Tigers forced five Yorktown fumbles, but were penalized 10 times for 81 yards.

“It’s early in the season and you’re going to make mistakes,” Mares said. “We need to get rid of these mistakes so we’re ready to roll by the time we get to district.”

Goliad returns to action Friday night when it hosts Edna (1-1) at Tiger Stadium.
