BEEVILLE — The Port Lavaca Sandcrab junior varsity boys had a long trip back home on Jan. 29 as the Beeville JV boys edged the visiting Sandcrabs 49-47.

“This was probably our best game all year, as it was also our closest game. This game was played in a six-point window either way with neither team able to pull away and both teams responding to and answering each other,” said Beeville JV coach Michael Hernandez.

The young Trojans led by three, 11-8, at the end of the first period. The lead was down to just one point, 19-18, at the half.

The Sandcrabs grabbed a one-point margin at 31-30 heading into the final quarter. The last period was a run-and-gun affair as the Trojans poured in 19 points and the PL boys hit for 16. The Sandcrabs led by four, 47-43, with 1:30 left. The Trojans closed to within one on a old-fashioned three-point play from Dylan Castillo to make it 47-46 PL with 45 seconds left to play. The Trojan defense played great down the stretch, creating three turnovers. The Beeville boys cashed in on just one of them but it was enough. Castillo drained a three-pointer from the top of the key with about two seconds left to gain the victory.

The Trojans got four second half treys from Castillo to lead the Beeville charge. Castillo finished with a game-high 22 points on the night. Post Jonathan Huser was also in double figures with 12. Tommy Dominguez sank nine markers, and Robert Torres scored six and was the team’s general on the floor at point guard.

Through last Tuesday night, the JV boys sported a 9-13 record for the season and are 2-5 in district play.

“It was good game for us and for the guys to win, and it was definitely fun to be a part of,” said Hernandez.

The Trojans played Calallen on Friday night and hosted Tuloso-Midway on Tuesday night. On Friday evening, the JV boys will entertain the boys from G-P.
