Jemison is the band’s drum major and will lead members during rehearsals and performances.
“During a halftime show, I will be on the podium directing the band,” Jemison said. “It will be my first time doing it. I’ve had to sit up on the podium a couple of times to ease my nerves, because it’s a little tall.”
The band will play during halftime at football games and will compete in three contests in October, including the Tournament of Bands, which will be held in Portland. The band will also travel to Mathis for the Lake Show Classic, and to Calallen for the University Interscholastic League regional marching contest, Jemison said.
Jemsion has been involved in band activities since she was in 6th grade and plays the clarinet during concert season. Her family moved to Corpus Christi two years ago, but she decided to continue attending Gregory-Portland. She plans to continue participating in band activities after graduation.
“I definitely want to go to a college that has a strong marching band, and hopefully become their drum major,” she said.
She would prefer to attend Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
“I would like to go to Ohio State because their marching band is really good,” Jemison said. “I’ve seen a lot of their shows, and it’s definitely something I’d love to be a part of. I want to go into biochemistry but always play music.”
Jemison plays bass guitar for a Christian rock band called Calling.
“We play all over Corpus Christi,” she said. “And my parents have a gospel group that plays at nursing homes. Music is a big passion of mine.”
