John Lewis Ross, 74, of Broken Arrow, Okla., died Sunday, April 1, 2012, in Lampasas.

Mr. Ross was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Kenedy to Robert Clawson and Alleene (Gibson) Ross. The family moved to Beeville in 1944. He attended Beeville schools and graduated from A.C. Jones High School in 1955. He received his bachelor’s degree from Langston University and married Geraldine “Geri” Shelton on June 28, 1959, in Lampasas.

He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Army and was a two-time recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. He was an investigator for the State Medical Examiners Office from 1976 until retiring in 1990. He spoke seven foreign languages fluently. He enjoyed reading, studying genealogy and teaching Sunday school. He was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife on June 21, 2009.

Survivors include a daughter, Regina (William) Nichols of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sons, John Ross Jr. of Kansas City, Mo., and Mike (Michelle) Ross of Broken Arrow, Okla.; nine grandchildren, Charles, Jennifer, Randy, Bailey, Matthew, Rebekah, Andrew, Dustin and Rachel; and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Gaynell Dalton of Lampasas; two brothers, Elliott Ross of Alice and Robert Ross Jr. of Oakwood; and two sisters-in-law, Irene Ross of Beeville and Doris Ross of Corpus Christi.

The funeral service was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Arrow Heights Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, Okla. with Rev. Scott Morie officiating. Burial was at 1 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Okla.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hayhurst Funeral Home in Broken Arrow, Okla.
