The Karnes County Retired Teachers’ Association met at Barth’s Restaurant Oct. 17 with 15 members present. Secretary/Treasurer Jan Anderson called the meeting to order at 2:30, and offered a prayer written by Mary Stewart. As members arrived they received the new chapter yearbooks which had been prepared by 1st Vice President Pam Kerlick. Gary Deskin led the members in pledges to the American and Texas flags. The minutes of the Sept. 19 meeting were approved as read, and the treasurer’s report was reviewed. Members were reminded that November is TRT Foundation month and that three charitable activities are funded: “A Helping Hand” assistance program for retirees in critical need, classroom assistance grants, and student scholarships. Donations to the Foundation Fund are always appreciated.

During committee reports Legislative Committee Chairman Gary Deskin stated that a legislative training DVD will be presented at the November meeting. The DVD will present information on contacting legislators and making viewpoints known. Gary also spoke about the upcoming Karnes City ISD Wealth Equalization Election. In news received from the district there will be an Aetna Medicare Advantage Seminar in Victoria in November. For further information on this please contact Jan Anderson at 583-3312. The District 3 Fall Conference will be Oct. 31 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbus, Texas.

Pat Hemby was the lucky recipient of the door prize. Arrangements for the meeting were handled by Group 2 members, and cobbler, along with coffee and tea, was available for everyone to enjoy. The next meeting will be Nov. 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Barth’s and will be hosted by Group 3. Membership in KCRTA is open to any retired school personnel, not just teachers. One of the purposes of KCRTA is to advance the interest and welfare of retired school personnel in the state and local community.
