According to a report filed by Highway Patrol Trooper Marvin Baker, Clint Kunchik of Karnes City was southbound on U.S. 181 about a mile north of the Highway 181 Business Route just before 3 p.m. when the accident occurred.
A witness who stopped to render aid said the driver sustained a head injury when his 1997 Dodge Ram pickup glanced off the side of a northbound 2002 Peterbilt tanker truck.
“He admitted he was texting,” the witness said. “He said he looked up and realized he had veered off into oncoming traffic.”
The driver of the 18-wheeler, 41-year-old Duain Snider of Louisiana, was not injured. However, the impact with the pickup knocked two tires off the tanker trailer Snider was pulling at the time.
Kunschik was rushed to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville by EMS personnel working for Angel Care Ambulance Service before being transferred by a HALO-Flight helicopter to the Corpus Christi hospital.
According to Baker’s report, Kunschik was not seriously injured.
Baker reported that Kunschik was being cited for driving in the left lane without passing.
