Karnes County Youth Show set for Jan. 16-18

KARNES COUNTY – Organizers and volunteers involved with the Karnes County Youth Show are getting ready for the annual event set for Jan. 16, 17 and 18.

The event highlights projects entered from young people all across Karnes County who compete for honors in livestock, clothing, handicraft, homemaking and other categories.

Shows and other activities at the Karnes County Youth Show Barn and grounds located on U.S. Highway 181 near Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital, get started on Thursday and continue through the Karnes County Youth Show Auction at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Members of Karnes County 4-H clubs, FCCLA members, FFA members and home economics class students are eligible to compete.

Thursday, the clothing and handicraft entry check-in is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Livestock weigh in and sifting will happen noon to 2 p.m. and the broiler weigh-in and sifting is set for 1 to 2 p.m. The commercial steer weigh-in will happen from 3 to 4 p.m.

The broiler show is the first show happening at 3 p.m. Thursday immediately followed by the turkey show. The lamb show happens at 4 p.m. as does handicraft judging. Commercial steers will be in place at 4:30 p.m. and the last show on Thursday is the goat show set to begin at 5 p.m.

Friday, food entry check-in happens from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Commercial steer judging is set for 8 a.m. and commercial steer interviews happen from 9 to 11 a.m. Food entries will be judged at 9:30 a.m. and the hog show is set for 10 a.m. The breeding cattle show is set for 2 p.m. From 3 to 6 p.m. the homemaking division is open to the public. The commercial steer awards will be presented at 3:45 p.m. The halter steer show is set for 4 p.m. and the homemaking sale will begin at 6:30 and continue till sold out. Handicraft pick up is set for 8 to 10 p.m.

Saturday, official sales sheet will be posted from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Set up for the auction is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. The homemaking awards will be presented at noon as well as pictures of rosette winners and other special presentations. The buyer’s party gets underway at 1 p.m. and the “Friends of the Karnes County Youth Show” and showmanship awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m. The highlight event of the show – the annual Karnes County Youth Show Auction, traditionally attended by large crowds – is set to start at 3 p.m.

On Sunday all participants will work together to clean up the Karnes County Show Barn and grounds beginning at 1 p.m.
