According to information from DPS, Jesus Rodriguez, 70, was driving a 2011 Chrysler 200 in the northbound lane of the highway near where the highway intersects FM 798. Rodriguez' wife, Nora Cano Rodriguez, 60, of Kenedy, was a passenger in the car.
A 2007 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Thomas Ryan O'Neil, 21, of Beeville, was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 181 near FM 798 when he attempted to pass a vehicle that was not involved in the accident in a “no passing” zone on a curve on the highway.
The Volkswagen was in the process of attempting to pass when it struck the Chrysler head-on in the northbound shoulder of the highway.
Jesus Rodriguez, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ted Staples. Nora Rodriguez, who was also wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, died at University Hospital in San Antonio the following morning at 2:50 a.m. as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
O'Neil, an oilfield worker who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, was listed in serious condition Monday morning with head, back and leg injuries, according to police.
