Kenneth Jay Orrell Sr., also known as Papa Smurf, Toot, PawPaw, PoPo, Ken or Kenny, was born on October 2, 1932, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Theresa Hazel (Labit) and Thomas Edward Orrell. He played football in high school and participated in Mardi Gras activities. He began his volunteer service to a community at the age of 12 by collecting 5000 pounds of paper as a boy scout for the war effort. He served in the Air Force where he met and married his wife, Sara (Smith) Orrell of 59 years, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Kenneth and his family joined the Beeville community in 1963. His family joined St. Philips Episcopal Church where he served as a Vestry member. He worked for the local natural gas company for 40 years and was a member of the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department for 48 years where he became the Father of the Department. Ken was a guest instructor every summer at Texas A&M College Station Fire School where he taught ladders to firefighters from all over the world. He was a founding member of the Beeville Volunteer Ambulance Service, where he also led an Explorer Post for the local young people. He was instrumental in bringing a community blood bank to the Beeville area where, over the years, he donated 20 gallons of blood. He volunteered his time to coach Little League baseball and continued his service to the community by participating as a parade official and a 20 year member of the Bee County Western Week Committee. He was an honorary member of the "Hole in the Wall Gang.” He was also designated “Man of the Year” one year by the Chamber of Commerce for his community involvement in the 70’s. Even after retiring from work and most of his other activities he continued in the Fire Department and served as the Beeville/Bee County Fire Marshal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Thomas Edward Orrell Jr. and Elliott Richard Orrell; his son, Craig Allan Orrell; a son-in-law, Frank Belcher; and a grandson-in-law, Brandon Lamprecht. He is survived by his wife, Sara (Smith); and children, Kenneth Jay Orrell Jr. and Kathryn Orrell Belcher. His closest family also includes Jane Shepherd; a granddaughter, Krystal (Roddy) Gamel (Ben); and children, Khelsey and Ty; granddaughter, JoDee (Orrell) Austin (Rusty), and children Matthew, Kyle and Sable; grandson, Justin Orrell (Celinda), and children, Colby, Caleb and Jarrett; granddaughter, Dani Leigh Orrell; grandson, Craig Allan Orrell; and grandson, Cody Lee Belcher-Orrell. He had a vast array of friends from all walks of life.

Kenneth always thought of Beeville as his home and did whatever he could to make it a better place for everyone to make their home. He will be watching over everyone from the side of our heavenly Father.
