MATHIS — The ball just wouldn’t fall for the Skidmore-Tynan varsity girls basketball team on Tuesday night, and the hometown Lady Pirates escaped with a 33-31 victory.

“We didn’t have our best game against Mathis. Little parts of the game that it takes to win just didn’t work for us,” said S-T head coach Joseph Grimes III.

“Hopefully, we can learn something from this game and get back to winning.”

Neither team was torrid as the pace was slow throughout the night. The Lady Pirates held a slim, three-point lead, 9-6, after the first period and bounced that to a 19-9 advantage at the half.

The Lady Cats fared better in the third quarter and erased six of the Pirates’ lead by outscoring Mathis 12-6 in the third quarter. It was still anybody’s game at 25-21.

The Lady Cats tried to rally and cut another two points off the Mathis lead but fell short in the final period, and the Lady Pirates captured the narrow win.

Amber Hughlett led the S-T scoring with 14 points. Zehila Frias added seven. Mari Martinez hit for five, and Naomi Garza finished with three. Courtney Leonard furnished two points in the loss.

The Lady Cats hosted the George West Lady ’Horns on Friday night. On Tuesday evening, the Lady Cats will host the Banquete Lady Bulldogs.
