ODEM — The early season tournaments provide a measuring stick for the area softball coaches as to what their teams need to work on and what just needs a tweak or two.

The Lady Trojans had some good outings at the Odem Lady Owls tournament over the weekend, but they are still a work in progress.

“We did not win as much as I would have liked, but we are steadily improving as we get closer to district,” said Lady Trojan head coach Jose Flores.

The Lady Trojans opened the tournament with a 9-5 loss to the Mathis Lady Pirates on Thursday. Rebecca De Los Santos had two hits in the contest while Eddika Ortega, Alyssa Bates, Rebekah Moreno and Samantha Guerra all came through with one base knock.

Game two at Odem had the Lady Trojans taking on the Rockport-Fulton Lady Pirates. The Beeville girls posted an 8-2 victory to bring their season record to 1-2 on the year. The Lady Trojans bunched together three runs in the first, a single run in the third and four big runs in the final fourth frame (tournament time restrictions) to notch the win.

Ortega, Olivarez, Amanda Gonzales and Brianna Gobel had a multi-hit outings against Rockport-Fulton pitching. Olivarez went yard for her first home run of the year.

De Los Santos was in the circle to pick up the win for A.C. Jones.

On Friday, the Lady Trojans ran into some good pitching. Banquete and Odem both blanked the Beeville girls by the identical score of 3-0. Against Banquete, the local girls picked up just two hits as Ortega and De Los Santos got base knocks for the Beeville girls. In the Odem contest, De Los Santos picked up one hit, as did Alexis Martinez.

On Saturday, the Beeville girls met Calallen and Falfurrias. The Wildcats earned a 4-1 win over the Lady Trojans while the Jersey Belles captured a hard-fought 6-4 victory. De Los Santos continued to hit, picking up three hits against Calallen and one against Falfurrias. Andrea Briseno had two hits in the game with the Belles.

The Lady Trojans out-hit both the Wildcats, five to four, and Falfurrias, seven to five, to exhibit some sticks. Martinez pitched in the tournament’s final game for JHS.

The Beeville girls played host to Ingleside on Tuesday night and will play in the Sinton tournament this weekend.
