BEEVILLE – A defensive battle for 100 minutes. That pretty much sums up the Lady Trojan 2-1 victory over Gregory-Portland last Thursday evening in the area round of the postseason playoffs.

“It was a great win for us, but if we want to continue our playoff run we have to start finishing our chances,” said Lady Trojan head coach Don Ledesma.

The Beeville girls broke a scoreless match open with a goal from Victoria Elizalde off a corner kick from Heather McKinney. Mackenzie Harvey looked to have a good shot at the corner kick but could not get the kick away. Elizalde then stepped through the G-P defense and got a foot on the ball to send it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Beeville lead with 8:34 left in the first half.

The Lady Trojan defense took over from there. Taylor Castillo, Sydney Wesson, Tori Munoz, Claire McKinney, Celeste Contreras, Niki Longoria and Anisa Cantu kept the charging Ladycats at bay for the rest of the match, almost.

“Tori Muñoz had another great effort in midfield and helped us pressure the ball. We have got to start getting her help in order to keep the pressure off our defense,” said Ledesma.

“And we need to support the attack because one player can’t dribble through six defenders.”

The 1-0 scoreboard held up through the rest of the first half and over 36 minutes of the second half. A G-P cross to the front of the Beeville goal found its mark and the recipient got one past Lady Trojan keeper Randi Maupin for the tying score. Both teams valiantly tried to get one more good shot over the final three minutes but neither side could. The match was destined for two 10-minute overtime periods.

The first OT period went the way most of the match had gone, scoreless. The teams switched sides at the end of the first OT period and then went over nine minutes before the match was finally decided. The Lady Trojans dominated the OT periods and kept the ball on the Ladycats’ side of the field for much of the time. Beeville was attacking as the clock went under a minute.

Celeste Contreras got the ball on the left side of the G-P goal and centered a kick to the front of the goal. A G-P defender went up for a header and she made contact with the ball. But, instead of heading the ball away from the goal, the ball went behind her, and the G-P goalkeeper could not get a hand on it. The ball trickled over the goal line for a Beeville score. There were just six seconds left in the second and final OT period.

“I didn’t think it was going in; I just wanted to get it to somebody who could score for us,” said Contreras after the match.

“It was very exciting.”

The Lady Trojans won a 2-1 match and claimed the area championship. The win advances the Beeville girls into the sectional round of the playoffs. That match is set for Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at Corpus Christi’s Buc Stadium against the Ray Lady Texans. The Ray team defeated Pleasanton 3-1 for its area title.
