Runge started the scoring with two runs in the top of the first off Pettus hurler Hana Kruger. The Lady Eagles cut the Runge margin in half with a run of their own in the home half of the first to make it a 2-1 ball game after one inning. The Lady Eagles tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
A scoreless third inning passed by but the Lady ’Jackets were flying high and hard in the fifth as five runners came across home plate to give Runge a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Pettus did not fold and regained the lead with a big six-run home half of the inning to get back on top, 8-7.
Runge knotted the tilt back up in the sixth with a single run. The visitors edged in front by two in the seventh, and their pitching blanked the Pettus girls in their final at-bats to earn the close victory.
Kruger walked once and scored for the Lady Eagles. Tristian Moore also earned a free pass and scored a run. Abby Cantu walked twice and scored one run. Destiny Carrillo reached base three times on two walks and a Runge error, scoring once for the home team. Madi Garza reached on a free pass. Catcher Ashlynn Schauer walked twice and scored both times she reached base. Blanca Prieto also walked twice and made it across home plate once in the loss. Brittany Treviño reached on a walk and scored once and was credited with one RBI.
“Even though our 3-9 record doesn’t reflect it, we improved as the season progressed and had some good wins. This team was very young and inexperienced and they worked hard to get better,” said head coach Anthony Ramirez.
“We are losing only one senior, Brittany Treviño, who will be missed, but we’re looking forward to beginning next season with a more experienced team.”
