The Lady Trojans had their chances but a late error allowed the visiting Alice Lady Coyotes to sneak out of Beeville with an 8-7 victory over the Beeville varsity on Tuesday evening.

“I was real proud of the team because they were able to battle back to take the lead in the second, third and fifth innings. We were not able to finish the game and that is something we need to work on,” said Lady Trojan head coach Adolfo Dominguez.

The Lady Trojans had things going their way early in the contest as they tied the game at 1-1 after the first inning and then took the lead with another single run in the bottom of the second. Both teams added three additional runs in the third frame to make it a 5-4 Beeville lead going into the fourth inning.

The Coyotes got one run in the fourth to tie the game, but the Beeville girls struck for two runs in the bottom of the fourth to answer and regain their slim lead of 7-5.

Alice fought back and put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth and one more run in the sixth to make it an 8-7 contest with the Coyotes out in front. Neither team scored in the final frame and the Alice girls captured the win.

The loss gives the Lady Trojan varsity a 4-2 record so far for the early season.

The Beeville bats were active with the Lady Trojans getting 14 hits in the game. Mari Garza, Destiny Herrera and Courtney Perez all smacked doubles for the Lady Trojans. Garza and Herrera both collected two hits on the night as did Sera Quiroga. The Lady Trojans committed three errors.

“We did hit the ball well, we had 14 hits; however, we have to find ways to get outs or play defense when the game is on the line,” Dominguez said.

The Lady Coyotes also swung the bats pretty well, collecting 12 hits over the seven innings, and they committed two errors.

Lady Trojan Sera Quiroga came on in relief of starter Courtney Perez and absorbed the loss on the mound for Beeville.

“We left two runners on in our last at bat. Therefore, we did give ourselves the opportunity to win the game, we just weren’t able to capitalize on the opportunities and they did,” Dominguez said.

The Lady Trojans are competing in the CCISD tournament this weekend. The Lady Trojans will begin District 30-4A competition on Tuesday, March 3, when the Ray Lady Texans pay a visit to Beeville.

The JV contest will start things with their first pitch at 5 p.m. and the varsity game beginning at 7 p.m.
