PETTUS – The big innings hurt the Lady Eagle softball team on Friday as the visiting Kenedy Leopards captured an 18-5 victory over the Pettus varsity.

“We played pretty well at times through five innings, then we lost focus. We hit the ball well early but only managed two hits after the third,” said head coach Anthony Ramirez.

“We have to work on having consistent play throughout seven innings.”

The Leopards got right after it and scored five runs in the top of the first, and it was 5-1 after the Lady Eagles pushed across one run in their home half of the inning.

The Leopards added three runs in the second, but the hosts kept right with them with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-4.

Kenedy failed to score in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Pettus girls cut one run off their deficit with a single run in the third. It was 8-5 and still anyone’s game going into the top of the sixth.

The Leopards got rolling on offense and plated four runs in the sixth and another six runs in the seventh to put the contest away.

Abby Cantu went 1-3 for the Lady Eagles with one walk and two runs in the game. Tristian Moore had one hit in four trips to the plate with a run scored. Hanna Kruger was 2-4, and Ashlynn Schauer was 1-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Destiny Carrillo was 1-3, and Brittany Treviño had one hit in two official at bats. Mercedes Gomez reached base by being hit by a pitch and came around to score a run for Pettus.

Defensively, catcher Schauer nailed three Kenedy runners at second on attempted steals.

On Friday night, the Pettus varsity played host to Woodsboro.
