The scoring was early and often for the Horns as the team was able to find the end zone in four out of five possessions in the first half. Lukas Barcak started the scoring for the Horns on the third play from scrimmage when he raced around the left side of the Cougar defense for a 51-yard jaunt to the end zone. Jessie Haros added the PAT to make it 7-0, George West, with a little more than eight minutes in the first half. The next time the Horns got the ball, it took them just three plays to hit paydirt again. After a long 60-yard run by Hudson Wallace to set the Horns up at the 1-yard line, Enrique Nieto dove in for the second score of the night. Andrew Katfey then passed to Joseph Feist for the 2-point conversion to make it 15-0, George West, with 6 minutes to play.
The Cole offense didn’t have much going for it through the night, as it would punt the ball away a total of seven times during the game. But on the team’s third possession, a fake punt conversion for a first down would set them up with their best opportunity of the night, at about George West’s 15-yard line. A few plays later, Cole quarterback Andre Terrell hit Patrick Height in the corner of the end zone for Cole’s lone score of the night. The PAT put the score at 15-7, to end the first quarter. That is as close as the Cougars got.
George West then added two more scores in the second quarter to extend its lead. The first touchdown was a 9-yard scamper by Katzfey to cap a six-play drive that covered 60-plus yards. The PAT by Haros put George West up 22-7 with 9:34 till halftime. Midway through the quarter, Katzfey connected with Feist again, this time for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Haros split the uprights again on the PAT to put the good guys up 29-7 at halftime.
The second half began just as the first would end, with the Horns moving the ball at will against the Cougar defense. George West received the kickoff to start the quarter, and covered 70 yards in six plays on the way to the end zone. Barcak raced in from 7 yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the night. The PAT made it 36-7, George West, with 9:24 left in the third quarter. On the Cougars next possession, sophmore Josey Blevens picked off a pass and returned it 70 yards, down to the Cole 5-yard line. On the next play, Bobby Torres pounded in for the Longhorn touchdown. The PAT by Haros put George West up 43-7 midway through the quarter.
The final score of the night for the Horns was another rushing touchdown when Matthew Martinez ran around the right end from 10 yards out to make it 49-7, George West.
This Friday, the Longhorns will travel to Goliad to take on the Tigers in what looks to be their toughest district match-up since the Marion game. Game time is 7:30 pm at Tiger stadium.
