KINGSVILLE — The Moreno Middle School volleyball teams made a clean sweep of the Lady Brahmas on their road trip last Monday night.

The 7A team won in three games, 2-1. The Lady Trojans emerged with a win in set one 25-15. Kingsville came back and captured set two at 25-17 to even the best of three match. The deciding third set was another close event, but the Lady Trojans prevailed with some strong serves and good defensive play, 25-18.

The victory improves the 7A team’s record in district to 3-1 on the year.

“The A team did a good job of encouraging each other and it really showed when they had to play that third set,” said coach Nidia Barrera.

The 7B team won its match in two straight sets, 25-16 and 25-14, over the Brahmas.

“The girls did a great job. They stuck together and worked as a team, which resulted in the win,” said coach Michelle Metz.

“They have improved tremendously in their volleyball skills.”

The 8B team won a couple of close sets against Kingsville. The two teams were pretty even, but the Beeville girls captured the match in two straight, 25-21 and 25-21.

“We’re still working on communication, but their skills have improved greatly. Brianna Bunton, Alexandra Gonzalez, Ashleigh Barrientes and Emily Bozant kept the Brahmas in awe with their serves,” said coach Sonia Cano.

“Raelynn Arrisola, Anyssa Villarreal and Allison Gamez had good hustle on the court. The ladies did a great job.”

The 8A match was another three-set nail-biter. In the first set, the Lady Trojans captured a 25-11 victory, but the home team fought back and earned a convincing 25-12 victory in set two to even the match. The third set was really close, going into extra points before the Lady Trojans got the final two for a 27-25 victory and a 2-1 win.

“The girls were passing, setting and hitting on almost every possession. We have come so far since that first game,” said coach Holly Vasquez.

“I am very proud of the girls.”

Good service games were attributed to Alyssa Medina, Mich Chavarria, Alyssa Silva, Mari Gonzales, Allison Gonzales and Makayla Martinez in the three-set match.

The Lady Trojans play their final matches of the season on Tuesday night at Tuloso-Midway.
