BEEVILLE — The Flour Bluff Lady Hornets could not keep up with their host Lady Trojan basketball teams as the MMS girls swept the visitors in all four games played on Thursday night.

The 8B team captured a 22-16 victory. The Lady Trojans struggled early, but came back to lead at the half 10-7. A good defensive effort kept the Flour Bluff girls at bay, and the Lady Trojans emerged with the win.

“These are hard working, dedicated and eager group of young women,” said MMS coach Sonia Cano.

Marissa Cisneros and Ashleigh Barrientes led the way with six points apiece. Mowdy Sanchez hit for four markers. Emilie Bozant, Brittany Colunga and Ava Salazar each contributed two tallies. The team finished with a 4-1 record in district play.

The 8A squad won a close contest 30-29 over the Lady Hornets. The Beeville girls led 14-5 after one period and 16-10 at the half. The young FB girls hit for 13 third quarter points while holding the MMS girls to eight to make it a 24-23 contest with the Beeville girls still holding a slight edge. Both teams recorded six points in the final quarter to keep the Lady Trojans on the winning side.

“The girls have a lot to be proud of this season. It was an exciting one,” said MMS coach Linda Luna.

Brianna Bunton led the Beeville scoring with eight markers. Michaela Chavarria hit for six points and Maricella Gonzales followed with five. Alyssa Medina added four. Makayla Martinez, Cierra Gonzales and Claudia Carranco contributed two apiece.

The 7B girls played the best defense of the night, holding the Flour Bluff team to just two points in a 19-2 victory.

“The Beeville girls gave it all their all in the last game of the season. I am very proud of the progress they have made,” said MMS coach Lorayne Chandler.

“I am looking forward to seeing these girls again next year.”

Alyssa Gonzales scored a team-high eight points. Lois Downing, Raissa Martinez, Briana Moreno, Kaylee Gutierrez and Virginia Delgado each contributed two points in the win. Angelica Soliz made a free throw.

The 7A girls dealt the visitors a 25-21 setback. The game was close throughout, and the Lady Trojans were able to take control late for the win.

“I am really proud of my girls this year. I have had a blast with these girls; they truly made the game of basketball fun,” said MMS coach Michelle Mertz.

“This is an immensely talented group of girls, and I encourage them to stick together as they will be a force to be reckoned with at the high school level.”

Kayla Johns led the scoring with 11 points. Kailey Perez matched her with 11 markers. Raeann Flores contributed two points while Kaitlyn Pelitire had one free throw. Coach Mertz acknowledged the defensive play of Flores, August Evans and Johns.

The 7A girls finished the season at 10-2 and were 5-1 in district.
