CORPUS CHRISTI — The Moreno Middle School Trojan A basketball teams split their games on Wednesday night with their host Flour Bluff.

The 7A Trojans found the speedy Hornets too much to handle as they fell 38-23 in an up-and-down contest. The Hornet offense clicked in all but one quarter. The Trojans shut down the host team and held them to two markers for the third period, but the Trojans could not climb out of the hole they found themselves in at the half. The Hornets went on to a relatively easy 15-point win over the young Trojans.

Thomas Dang, Dolton Corpus and Joesea De la Cruz all hit for six points for the Beeville boys. Bryan Lucio and Elijah Rodriguez each scored two points while Blake Casarez added one free throw.

Helping out on the defensive end were Jacob Flores, Isaiah Johns and Isaiah Moreno for the Trojans, according to MMS coach Ernest Gonzales.

“Considering the deficit and odds the boys had to overcome, I was really proud that there was some fight and energy despite being down,” said Gonzales.

The 8A squad of Trojans racked up another win with a 36-21 decision over the Hornets to run their district record to an unblemished 5-0.

It was a slow start for both teams, but the MMS boys edged in front 4-3 after one period. The Trojans hit for 10 markers in the second quarter to forge a 14-7 advantage heading into the intermission.

The Beeville offense finally got going in earnest in the second half, working the ball down inside to the Trojan bigs for high percentage shots. The Beeville boys out-scored the Hornets 22-14 in the second half to capture the win.

Leading scorer for the Trojans was Augie Canas with eight points. Adolf Garcia supplied seven markers while Jordan Cantu added five. James Graham and Jacob Castro came in with four each. Nick Gonzales had three tallies while Steve Barrera and Michael Virrata both sank two. Justin Cantu added one free throw.

“Bryan Reyna took care of the ball with no turnovers and played outstanding defense,” said MMS coach Ricardo Maldonado.

The 8A squad improved to 5-0 in district and 8-0 on the season. The Trojans will face Kingsville in their last game at home on Feb. 4, when they will play for the sole possession of the district title for their second straight year.
