The eighth-grade B team pulled out a 30-22 victory over the young Coyote girls. It was close, but the Beeville girls forged ahead with a strong second half to gain the win.
Madaline Zambrano led the Beeville scoring with six points. Brittany Colunga, Gabriela Aguirre, Ashleigh Barrientes and Marissa Cisneros each contributed four points in the Lady Trojans’ balanced scoring attack. Emilie Bozant, Victoria Mercado, Brittany Lucio and Ava Salazar hit for two apiece.
“There is still much work to do, but these ladies they are a group of hard workers,” said MMS B team coach Sonia Cano.
The seventh-grade A squad started strong and led Alice 16-4. The Coyotes fought back over the middle two periods and trailed the Lady Trojans by just two points heading into the final quarter.
The Lady Trojans failed to give in and regrouped for a 34-30 win over the Alice girls.
Kayla Johns led the Beeville scoring with seven markers. Kaitlyn Pelitire, Aaliyah Ruiz and Kailey Perez each hit for six points in the win. Raeann Flores contributed five points and Saleen Flores popped for four.
Johns, Flores, Perez and Ruiz also earned praise from coach Michelle Mertz for their defensive stands against the Coyotes.
“This was really the first game they have had to fight for, and they stepped up and worked together to win it. The girls were able to pressure the ball and rattle their opponent, all the while keeping up great attitudes and good sportsmanship,” Mertz said.
The 7B team lost a close contest to the Alice girls, 22-19.
“We’re still working on basic basketball skills. The girls are beginning to show hints of A-team material, and we will continue to work hard in practice and in pour games,” said Lorayne Chandler.
Virginia Delgado led the Beeville scoring with six points. Briana Moreno had four points. Lois Downing, Raissa Martinez and Angelica Soliz each contributed two markers and Lauryn Botello added one.
The 8A team worked hard for a 28-22 victory over Alice. The Lady Trojans went up 8-2 early in the contest but led by just two, 14-12, at the half.
The Lady Trojans were hot in the third period with Claudia Carranco and Michaela Chavarria combining for 11 points. The Beeville defense then stepped to the fore and limited the Alice team to just two fourth quarter points to ensure the 28-22 win.
Carranco finished with eight points to lead the MMS scoring. Alyssa Silva recorded six points and Chavarria followed with five. Makayla Martinez hit four points in the win. Cierra Gonzales and Brianna Bunton each added two and Leticia Martinez finished with one.
“Improvement on defense was shown by all the Lady Trojans. It was rare that the Lady Coyotes got a chance to run their offense as Abigail Traylor, Cierra Gonzales, Martinez, Carranco and Alyssa Medina kept them in check and got our offense back in business,” said MMS coach Linda Luna.
