The McMullen County Cowgirls had a good week of basketball going 4-1 and finishing second in their own tourney.

The Cowgirls defeated Charlotte last week on their home court winning 48-38. The girls played well in spurts and had a twelve point lead in the third quarter but give the Lady Trojans credit as they clawed back in the game and cut the lead to two in the fourth.

Ashley Zetzsche came off the bench to hit two big baskets to increase a lead that would never be relinquished. Destinee Thomas and Sarita Cavazos lead in scoring with 13 each.

In McMullen’s home tourney, the Cowgirls defeated Kenedy in the opening round (45-37) and then defeated Charlotte (44-37) before falling to a good Nueces Canyon team (44-28).

In the Nueces Canyon game, the team got rattled early which let the opponents build an eleven point lead at half but the girls seemed to settle down and play much better as the game went on.

The Lady Panthers had scored over 80 points in each of their first two games in the tournament so the coach was pleased with our defensive effort.

“We just need to learn to stay under control and not panic when teams press us. I was proud of our effort which is never a problem for this team,” said Coach Taylor.

Jasmyn Smith and Destinee Thomas were named to the All Tournament Team.

The Junior High teams both won last week as the eighth grade girls defeated Nordheim 46-2 while the seventh grade downed Pleasanton 27-25. All who helped with the McMullen County Tourney are appreciated, it was a huge success once again. Coach Taylor enthused, “I know this, I’ll put up our hospitality room vs. anyone in the state of Texas.”

Coach Taylor also appreciated the teams who allowed Three Rivers girls to play an early morning game on Saturday and still attend the funeral of a former student/athlete.
