I am a great-grandson of Pat Martin (Beeville police chief featured in the Feb. 16 edition); my grandfather, Felix Martin (his son), lived in Laredo, as I do now. The guy who shot the officers was Selvie Winworth Wells, and he served 25 to 30 years in Alcatraz and there are a lot of references on the Internet of his appeals getting the 4th count dropped.
The ironical thing is, when Wells was in Alcatraz, my aunt, Patsy Martin (granddaughter of Pat Martin), lived in Mill Valley, Calif., across the Golden Gate Bridge from where you can see Alcatraz, and we visited her when I was a kid. Little did she know when we toured around Alcatraz in a boat that the guy who shot her grandfather was there. Wells was released about the time Alcatraz was closed (1963) and died at the age of 68 in 1976 in Houston, Texas.
