BEEVILLE — The Alice Coyotes trotted into the gyms at Moreno Middle School on Monday night to play a little volleyball. The Lady Trojans vanquished the visitors in three of the four matches.

The 7A team won in an exciting three-set match, 2-1. Scores of the best of three were 23-25, 25-21 and 25-17.

All three sets were close and the Lady Trojans fought back to take two straight sets after dropping the opening set by just two points.

Raeann Flores and Kailey Perez both led the team in kills. They played a strong game at the net, making it difficult for the Alice team to return their hits, according to coach Nidia Barrera.

Madelyn Rodriguez and Aaliyah Ruiz played strong in the setter position, helping get the ball to the hitters. Kayla Johns and Kaitlyn Pelitire both earned 18 points throughout the three sets from their serves.

“They both had a great serving game, forcing Alice to make adjustments and use timeouts,” Barrera said.

“I am very proud of the 7A Lady Trojans; they all worked hard and stayed focused on their goal of winning the game.”

The 8A team won in two straight sets, 25-17 and 25-22. Mich Chavarria served for eight points in the first set win, while Alyssa Silva followed with five points in the opener.

Alyssa Medina led the way in set two with four points off her serve, and Silva contributed three service points.

“It was a well-played match. The girls played so much more aggressive on offense, and we didn’t just bump the ball back over,” said coach Holly Vasquez.

“We finally started to make our serves, and that made a big difference last night.”

The Trojan defense also played well, as the Coyotes had to try and make return after return on Trojan digs and hits.

“I am also seeing a lot of improvement with our defense and transitions on and off the net. I am very excited for the girls,” Vasquez said.

The 7B team lost to the Coyotes in three sets (no score available).

“We came out with a lot of energy, and the girls got right down to business during the first game, with some strong serving from Brandy Rios and Daniela Esparza, along with great team play and passing from Faith Hernandez and Virginia Delgado,” said coach Sonia Cano.

“The team’s energy and excitement slipped away during the second game, which left us fighting for a win in the third that we couldn’t quite pull off.”

The Lady Trojans pulled together and look to continue to improve.

“We are continuing to make progress in the fundamentals of volleyball. We just need to work on the little things, like communication, that always seem to get us in the end. I’m very proud of my girls,” Cano said.

The 8B team went three sets with the Lady Coyotes before getting the victory. Scores of the sets were 25-22, 23-25 and 25-19.

“We won the first set with some great serves by Brianna Button and Mowdy Sanchez. The second set was a close one, 25-23, with good plays by Ashleigh Barrientes and Sarah Delbosque,” said coach Michelle Mertz.

“The third set was an exciting win, 25-19, with killer serves from Stephanie Matthews and great plays by Victoria Mercado and Abigail Traylor.”

The MMS Lady Trojans will be in Kingsville on Monday.
