The Ben Bolt Lady Badgers captured first place in the finals on Saturday with a win over McMullen County in the tournament finale.
The host Pettus squad earned third place with a decisive victory over the S-T girls.
The Lady Cats defeated Runge and Prairie Lea in two games and split with eventual champ Ben Bolt in pool play on Thursday.
In Saturday’s bracket play, the S-T girls defeated Nordheim 25-14 and 25-19 before running into Ben Bolt again. The Lady Cats took set one, 25-21, but the Badger girls won the final two, 25-20 and 25-12.
The final match of the day for both Pettus and Skidmore-Tynan had the two Bee County schools battling each other for third place. The home court Lady Eagles swept the S-T girls, 25-11 and 25-15, to earn the third place spot in the tournament.
Pettus placed two players on the all-tourney team with Madi Garza and Tristian Moore earning the honors for their play in the two-day event. The Lady Cats added two team members as Amy Berthold and Haley Scott were selected to the all-tourney team. Berthold led the Lady Cats with 19 kills and seven aces for the tournament. Scott set for a team-high 17 assists.
“I was real happy with the way we played on Thursday. We played as a team and had a lot of good things happen,” said S-T head coach Tim Stowe.
The play on the weekend was not quite as well received by the S-T coach.
“On Saturday, it was a disappointment to everyone when we came out so flat. We have a lot of work to do, but I believe our team is going to get over the hump,” said Stowe.
“I’m very happy with the attitude our team has, and I know they will show great resolve as we practice this week. Each day we will get better, and that’s exciting.”
Pettus and Skidmore-Tynan locked up again on Tuesday for a rematch of the tournament’s third place contest. But this time the match will be on the Lady Cats’ floor.
On Friday, the Lady Eagles host Karnes City at 10:30 a.m. The Lady Cats will not be back on the court until Aug. 27 when they host Three Rivers. The first serve is set for 5 p.m. A full slate of freshman, junior varsity and varsity matches will be on tap.
