CONVERSE – Three Pettus track athletes have qualified to go to the state track and field meet in Austin on May 11-12 and a few Eagles and Lady Eagles just missed.

The top two finishers in each Region IV meet advance to state. Winning spots on the bus to Austin were Savannah Delbosque in the 1,600-meter run with her second place finish at 5:45.14. Chloe Garza will also be making the trip to compete in the 300-meter hurdles after a second place finish at Region with a time of 46.87. Eagle Casey Jones will also be in Austin, thanks to his second place finish in the 400-meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 50.60 just .14 seconds off the first place time.

Also at the Region IV meet, the 4x400-meter relay team of Tristian Moore, Chloe Garza, Savannah Delbosque and Anna Elder placed third with a time of 4:11.31. Elder was also third in the 200-meter dash in 27.45. Garza placed sixth overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.00. She also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15-11. Elder placed 10th at the big meet in the same event with a jump of 14-7.75.

Delbosque was third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:38.56. Elder placed sixth in the triple jump competition with a hop, skip and jump of 33-10.75.

Eagle Silvestre Sanchez placed seventh in the 1,600-meter run at Region with a time of 4:56.18. Elder finished off her day with a fourth place spot in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.47.

“I have had the privilege to coach these two young ladies for the past 6 years. Throughout these years they have always demonstrated the desire to be the best they can be,” said Lady Eagle track coach Erica Garza.

“Having now qualified for the 2012 UIL State Track Meet, is a satisfying experience.”

Coach Garza will be reliving some memories of her own in Austin and making some new ones with her daughter.

“For Savannah, it will be an honor for me as a coach to watch her run an event at Mike Meyers Stadium that I had ran. For Chloe, to be her coach and mother the honor is just as great to reach this accomplishment together,” said coach Garza.
