Some of you may remember that last summer I challenged the readers in Runge to try to read more books than me. We set up some teams (Team Me, featuring me, and Team Everyone Else, featuring well, you get the picture) and in three short weeks each team read over 11,400 pages. Team Everyone Else triumphed (by a measly 17 pages) and they all received a pizza party and a totally awesome shrieking flying monkey.

Unacceptable. I deserved that shrieking flying monkey and I'd have gotten it, too, if not for those meddling kids. So we're going to try this little dance again with a couple of changes along the way.

First the contest will run from Monday, July 15 to Friday, Aug. 9. That's four whole weeks instead of three.

Second, anyone who is reading middle grade or above can participate. Hear that adults who got a little cocky last summer? Now you can put your money where your mouth is and join the contest. If enough people sign up, we will form extra teams, but I will still compete alone.

Third, there will be a pizza party and the winning team will all receive prizes. But in addition, the individual who reads the most will receive their very own prize.

As I did last year, I'll be posting progress reports on my blog, Rampant Biblioholism, and on Facebook (“like” Runge Public Library to get the updates), as well as in the paper each week. Those who don't have cards with the Runge Library can follow along and keep track of their own reading and see how it stacks up each week (if you'd like to read along and let us know how you're doing, we'd love to hear from you, but remember, only books that you've checked out from your local library count).

To check out all of the rules and to sign up, please call or come by the Runge Public Library before July 15. Bring it on, Runge. Bring. It. On.
