“We started off really strong, a few silly turn-overs, but we ended the first half ahead by one,” said Pettus head coach Sunny DeCamp.
The Pettus girls and the visitors locked up in a close first half battle as neither team got a chance to pull away by more than a point or two. The Lady Eagles held a slim 16-15 advantage at the end of the first period and then went into the locker room at the half still up by that one point at 26-25.
The third quarter was the difference maker, as the Lady Eagles got into early foul trouble and the Redfish came out shooting lights out.
A-T grabbed the lead at 40-34 by the end of the third period and added one more point to its lead by the end of the fourth quarter, taking a 49-42 victory back to the coast.
“The girls did well on transitioning into a zone defense when we got into foul trouble. We are still working on getting comfortable with our defense,” DeCamp said.
“Our offense looked good; they ran the plays well and some great drives and fast breaks.”
Ryan Grayson led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 18 points, and she worked hard on the glass with six rebounds. Madi Garza had a good all-around game with seven points, eight rebounds, and she dished out five assists.
The A-T girls were led by the 17 points from Hayley Newton. Lauren Kelso contributed eight markers in the A-T win.
Pettus is competing in the Woodsboro tournament this weekend and will return to Woodsboro on Tuesday to tangle again with those Lady Eagles.
