The Bulldogs played toe-to-toe with the Bobcats but it would not be enough to stop the number one 2A team in the state.
“This game is exactly what we needed - a war for four quarters,” said Jason Herring, head coach.
The Bobcats would only score once in the first half on a 21-yard field goal off the toe of Adolfo Cordero on Refugio’s first possession in the first quarter. The rest of the half was a defensive battle for both teams but the Bobcat offense still produced better numbers. Refugio’s offense garnered 136 total yards in the first half while the defense held the Bulldogs to just 65 total yards.
The defense showed their muscle, keeping Banquete down to just less than three yards a carry and four yards per pass.
In the second half, the Bobcats hit the gas, scoring once in the third quarter and scoring three times in the fourth period. In the third quarter Chase Whetsel scored on a nine-yard run to make the score 10-0. The fourth quarter would see the Bobcats hitting on all cylinders with Travis Quintanilla finding Marcus Thompson for two scores. The first from 8-yards out and the second for 65 yards to make the score 24-0. Draigon Silvas would post the final points for the night with a one-yard touchdown run as the clock dwindled out to make it 31-0.
Defensive standouts for the Bobcats included Devon LaFrance, Jim LaFond, Alex Coronado, Jack Gumm and Jake Henderson. John Wesley Shipp put up magic numbers with five tackles on the night.
The Bobcats will travel to Kingsville this Friday to take on Santa Gertrudis.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
