Karnes County — The American Cancer Society is proud to announce that the Relay For Life of Karnes County ranked first out of forty-five events for per Capita fund raising (competing by division against like-size counties of 15,000 – 19,999 residents).

Ranks were based on Relay For Life events across the High Plains Division – which consists of the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Hawaii, and the territory of Guam. Karnes County’s per capita fund raising of $7.53 secured first place, while Young County at $6.91, and Lavaca County at $6.53 placed second and third respectively.

“We are very proud of our volunteers, teams, participants, and the entire Karnes County community,” said John Pish, Community Manager for the American Cancer Society. “Everyone worked extremely hard to make their Relay For Life so successful, and these high division ranks are proof that their work paid off.”

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and empowers others to fight back against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fund raising walk in the nation.

“The funds raised through the Society’s Relay For Life events enable us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back,” added John. “Due to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, the money raised by Relay For Life participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”
