BEEVILLE — It has to be one of the hardest jobs in Beeville.

Judging the First Baptist Church’s baking contest, that is.

The judges are supposed to be satisfied by tasting a small portion of a tiny slice out of a cake or pie, or a miniscule chunk out of a cookie.

But, every year, the church manages to find a few volunteers who can overcome the temptation to just dive in and devour the entries.

Keeping the pieces small for tasting is an important part of the process because every one of the entries is sold at auction the evening of the contest to raise money for scholarships. And no one wants to bid on half of a cake.

This year, Brenda Treviño, Michelle Gonzales, Michelle Bond, Grace Rodriguez and Tanya Longoria agreed to fight temptation and help the event’s organizer, Neta McMullen, judge the contest.

They also had to look pretty for the camera when Mike Da Silva and Preston West of KIII, Channel 3 in Corpus Christi showed up for the event.

The television personalities were in town because the entertainment for the evening was Tino Wallenda, a member of the world famous Flying Wallendas of Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus fame.

Wallenda was in the church’s gymnasium, where the evening’s dinner was to be held, rehearsing on a tight rope (actually he called it a pipe) he had brought with him from his home in Sarasota, Fla.

The winners of this year’s baking contest were:

Grand champion cake — Caleb McMullen

Reserve champion cake — Trevor Fox

Third place cake — Lila McFall

Fourth place cake — Harper Green

Fifth place cake — Jacob Montez

Sixth place cake — Faith Leonard

Grand champion cookies — Paul Looney
