REFUGIO COUNTY – A Rosenberg man died when his 2004 SUV was hit head on by a large pickup pulling a trailer about 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Blair Payne, 34, died at the scene about nine miles south of Refugio on Farm-to-Market Road 2678, said Department of Public Safety Cpl. Charlie Ramirez.

The driver of the pickup, Tyler Gramham, 23, had minor injuries.

Ramirez said Payne was traveling in the southbound lane when Gramham’s northbound pickup crossed over into the southbound lane and struck Payne’s vehicle.

Gramham’s pickup, thought to be a Ford 350, was pulling a trailer with a large metal box. The truck was a Flo-Tech Equipment Specialties vehicle.

After striking the SUV, the pickup traveled on to stop on a ranch road about 100 yards farther.

The speed limit at the part of the farm road is 70 mph.

Ramirez said driver fatigue is thought to be the reason for the accident, and a citation or charges are pending.

In addition to DPS, Refugio County Sheriff’s Office, Refugio Fire Department and the EMS were at the scene.
