“Friday was a good win for our S-T Bobcats. It was a total team effort and we feel we improved in many areas that needed it as we prepare to take on the Banquete Bulldogs,” said head coach Dan Garza.
The S-T defense gave up just 51 yards rushing and another 36 yards in the air to the Cowboys offense. The Bobcats rushed their way to a 21-0 lead by halftime.
The Bobcats score in the first period came off a six-yard run by Jeremy Byrd. The PAT kick by Sonny Hernandez was good and the S-T boys held an early 7-0 advantage. Byrd again scored in the second period on a short run of one yard for a 14-0 lead over the Cowboys. By halftime , the Bobcats led 21-0 with Zach Mengers plunging into the end zone from two yards out for the third ‘Cat score of the night.
S-T put the game away in the third period with two more TD’s for a 35-0 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes.
Byrd picked up his third TD of the game on a seven-yard burst and Mengers got his second TD of the night a little later on a two-yard run.
The pace slowed a little in the fourth and final quarter as the Bobcats added one more final score for the 41-0 victory.
R.J. Estrada ran it in from 15 yards out to put the final at 41-0. The final PAT was blocked but George Garcia made good on his first try on the Mengers’ second half score.
The Bobcats compiled 379 yards of offense against the Cowboys, with 314 yards coming on the ground. Sonny Hernandez led the way with 169 yards on 11 carries. Jeremy Byrd ran for 77 yards on 11 totes.Javier Barrientes totaled 15 yards on four ties. Donovan Encina carried the ball three times for 22 yards. QB Zach Mengers rushed three times for eight yards and passed for 65 yards on three of seven completions.
Hernandez hauled in one pass for 21 yards. Thomas Moore had one catch for 18 yards and Brandon East snagged the other completion, going for 26 yards.
The Bobcats travel to Banquete on Friday night to tangle with the Bulldogs. Banquete is coming off a 65-0 win over Santa Gertrudis.
The Bobcats are now 2-1 in District 16-2A Division II play.
“All district games are important as the season begins to wind down. We want our team to focus on one game at a time, knowing that each week brings its own challenges and obstacles that we have to overcome to have a shot at postseason competition,” Garza said.
