SCHROEDER — The Schroeder Volunteer Fire Department is holding its Eighth Annual Fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Schroeder Dance Hall.

SVFD members are selling Raffle tickets for $5 each or five for $20 along with pre-sale barbecue meal tickets for $8. The meal will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along with a country store, silent auction, plant store, and live auction.

A little over eight years ago, a group of people from the Schroeder area sat down and decided to form a volunteer fire department.

These neighbors put up their own money to start the fire department. They were able to obtain an old army two-ton vehicle and equip it with a water tank along with a pump. They developed written training procedures, developed written bylaws, elected leaders from their membership, trained responders, and organized a fundraiser.

This was the beginning of what today includes a new 2010 3,000- gallon tanker truck, a used 1992 Ford 2,300-gallon tanker/brush truck, a used 1982 brush truck/utility truck with a new six-wheel UTV, a 1984 fire engine pumper, a new 2009 Ford 450 brush truck, and a new 2011 Ford 550 brush truck equipped with vehicle extraction equipment and first- aid equipment along with a dedicated group of responders.

These response vehicles were obtained using funds from grants, donations, and money from fundraisers. These vehicles are stored in a five-bay building that was built by all volunteers using donated materials along with materials bought by the department.

The department has another building that is used for storing one brush truck, training, and meetings that was also built by volunteers. All this was accomplished by volunteers dedicating their time and energy.

Today, Goliad County has four county volunteer fire departments along with Goliad Volunteer Fire Department. These volunteer fire departments respond to emergencies as directed by the Goliad County Sheriff’s Department.

The Schroeder Volunteer Fire Department covers an area from U.S. Highway 59 East to State Highway 183 North. Schroeder also responds to calls for assistance from Goliad and surrounding counties.
