The Pettus coaches will need to put a little more time in on conditioning next year if they hope to stay with the young legs of the departing senior athletes in their annual end-of-year basketball contest.

The seniors pulled away late in the fourth quarter as they outran the game “old-timers,” 59-47.

“The game was a lot of fun. The young legs of the seniors were just too much for the old coaches in the end,” said Athletic Director Steve Marbach.

“Out of 25 kids that we have graduating this year, 20 were high school athletes.”

The seniors competed with 18 of their 25 graduating class and had the numbers in their favor going up against the Eagles’ 13 coaches.

The coed contest had the seniors gain a slim 11-9 lead at the end of one quarter. The crafty coaches came back and took the second period by one, 14-13, to cut the margin to one point, 24-23, by halftime.

The two teams fought evenly through the third quarter of up-and-down basketball with each team recording 17 points. It was still a one-point game at 41-40 going into the final eight minutes.

The quick pace of the third may have been the coaches’ downfall. The seniors raced to 18 fourth quarter points while the coaches managed to hit for just seven points over the final period. The final was all seniors at 59-47.

“What a great group of seniors. They do everything with class, and they were great leaders. We sure are going to miss them next year,” Marbach said.

The seniors playing in the game included Reyes Cruces, Tori Garza, Alonzo Carreon, Aaron Escamilla, Sarah Gill, C.J. Gill, Robert Hudson, Paige Fox, Victor Martinez, Michael Perkins, Adri DeLeon, Anthony Terry, Chris Lyssy, Olivia De Los Santos, Kris Stewart, Roberto Martinez, Harmony Jones and Michael Fuentes, The team was coached by Cayla Moreno.

Coaches who gave their best included Niki Fudge, Erica Garza, Darcy Siddon, Jimmy Gauna, Laura Staples, Doug Moczygemba, Noel Lopez, Todd Fuller, Abby Brown, Anthony Ramirez, Sunny DeCamp, Steve Marbach and Robert Langsford.
