The Trojans started with 11 boys and six girls in the tournament on Friday. Still in the championship bracket were Rogelio Salazar at 113 pounds, Cordell Aguirre at 145 pounds, Brent Puga at 195, and Lady Trojan Danielle Perez at 102 pounds.
In the consolation bracket, the Trojans had Mario Perez at 120 pounds, Jeremy Perez at 160 and Lady Trojan Heidi Rodriguez at 138 pounds.
Salazar placed second in his weight division to qualify for state. Aguirre finished fifth but won a “wrestle back” match against the fourth place finisher to gain his spot in Austin. Puga placed fourth overall to gain a spot on the bus to Austin for the state meet. Perez claimed fourth, but a knee injury in his last match of the day forced him to forfeit a wrestle back contest. He will be an alternate at the state meet.
Lady Trojan Danielle Perez placed third at region, defeating the district champion in Beeville’s district from San Antonio Highlands and qualified to go to state. Heidi Rodriguez placed fifth at the region meet and will make the trip to state as an alternate in her weight class for Region IV.
The state wrestling meet will be held Feb. 21-23 in Austin.
