Thirty-two members and friends of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ander participated in a camp work weekend at Camp Lutherhill in La Grange April 27-29.

The group built a one-sided covered shelter near the pond so the campers will have a shady reprieve from the sun. Other work during the weekend included cutting and clearing brush that was encroaching on a roadway.

A $1,200 grant to purchase materials for the project was provided by the Greater Victoria Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans through its Care Abounds in Communities chapter care program. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provides funding for members participating in community service teams. These teams are formed to conduct fund-raising activities and/or hands-on service activities. Activities can benefit individuals, families, local communities or organizations that are exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, excluding congregations.

In addition to the grant for materials, Thrivent also provided a $200 grant to assist with the cost of meals for the volunteers during the work weekend.

Opened in 1954, Lutherhill is a summer camp and year-round retreat center. The 84-acre camp sits atop the highest point in Fayette County.

Summer camp programs for youth and families are provided from June-August each year. During the rest of the year, the camp provides space for retreats for non-profit and church-related groups and programmed retreats for youth, adults and family groups.

Lutherhill is a ministry of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The April 27-29 camp work weekend was the 44th-annual camp work weekend for St. Peter’s. Located at 1545 E. FM 1961 in Ander, the congregation holds worship at 9 a.m. each Sunday. Additional information about the congregation is available at
