Every person in the room raised their hand during a public hearing July 7 when asked who opposed a proposed animal ordinance for Karnes City.

Several community members that have spoken to the subject at previous meetings reiterated their reasons for opposition, including the existence of a chapter of the Texas Agriculture Code that deals with stray animals, lack of clarity in the language of the ordinance, and a skepticism about law enforcement’s ability to handle loose livestock in a safe manner.

Karnes City Attorney Frank Garza did point out one difference, which is that the proposed ordinance would permit Karnes City Police officers to contain loose livestock, as opposed to only sheriff’s deputies, as indicated in the Texas Agriculture Code.

A second public hearing is scheduled for July 21 at 6 p.m. at Karnes City City Hall. After two public hearings, council may vote on the issue.
