BEEVILLE — The Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Region IV Honor Guard has been invited to participate in the annual National Memorial Service for Fallen Correctional Officers of the Year 2011.

The event will be held from June 7 until June 10 in Washington, D.C.

Honor guard members will hold a car wash Saturday from 10 a.m. until as late as 4 p.m. at Dave Moore Ford.

All proceeds will go toward paying for the Washington trip.

The honor guard was organized years ago. Today, sporting blue, military campaign hats with gold cords, gold ascots worn under starched, creased shirts with gold ropes on the left shoulder and formal, navy blue slacks with double gold stripes, the Region IV team is one of the sharpest honor guards in Texas.

Many members of the guard have military backgrounds. They now work at TDCJ units in this area.

Guard members include Capt. Thomas Gutierrez, Capt. Luis Hernandez, Sgt. Esperanza Hernandez, Sgt. Gil Arizmendi, Sgt. Claudia Loera, Alfredo Salinas, James Sustaita, Joseph Lefferts Sr., Nathan Lill, David Ortiz and David White.

Assistant Region IV Director Barbara Treviño said the honor guard is available to serve during numerous functions.

However, anyone wanting to have the guard at an event must contact the regional headquarters at 362-6323. Those making requests for the group to be at their events must meet certain criteria.
